Jason: Great question Juan Miguel. An expert witness is a person who testifies because he or she has specialized knowledge about something related to your case. For example, if you were in an automobile accident, you might work with an accident re-constructionist or an accident investigation expert.
Juan Miguel: Oh, I get it, so they look at my case and give their expert opinion on what happened, right?
Jason: Yes. Normally they are called in to help to explain something that is complex or specialized so the jury can understand it better.
Juan Miguel: So how do I know if I should hire one for my accident?
Jason: Juan Miguel, that really depends on the circumstances of your case. My suggestion is that you schedule a consultation with an attorney if you don’t have one already. The attorney should be able to advise you on the steps to take, including whether an expert witness is necessary.
Juan Miguel: I don’t know Jason. Hiring an attorney and an expert witness sounds expensive.
