It was May 2019 and the end of the school year for 18-year-old Mario Alberto Benevides III of Kingsville. He was wrapping up 12th grade and making plans to attend Del Mar College in the fall to pursue a physical therapy degree. Sadly, Mario’s schooling would end with high school.

On Friday, May 24th, Mario was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a fatal car accident on FM 70 six miles east of Bishop. He was riding in a 2008 Ford Fusion along with 4 other people, including a two-year-old child.

The crash happened around 11:17 pm that night when the vehicle Mario was riding in veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz traveling the opposite direction. Mario was killed at the scene. And so was 2-year-old Haven Lee Sandoval (even though he was secured in his car seat).

Two more passengers in the Ford vehicle were injured and taken to the hospital as well as the driver of the Mercedes.

When the accident happened, it received a lot of press. But the media outlets haven’t reported any closure and many questions are left unanswered. Why did the Ford Fusion veer into the other lane? What happened to the victims who were transported to the hospital? And who was ultimately to blame for the accident?

In cases like these, it’s always a good idea for victims and their families to speak with a lawyer about the accident before agreeing to accept money from the insurance company. An injury lawyer can help you understand what your rights are and how to go about pursuing them.

You may be entitled to compensation for damages, even if you or a loved one were in the vehicle that appears to have caused the accident. Remember, things aren’t always as they seem.

Today, there are reconstruction specialists who have the expertise and technology to literally recreate the scene of the accident and build a clear picture of exactly what happened.

Did you know that crash data can be taken from your vehicle airbag, whether or not it deploys? Even things like a steering wheel or brakes can leave clues to what happened at the scene of the crash.

Not everyone is aware that this information exists, or how to interpret it. It often requires a highly skilled forensics and crash data expert to put all the pieces back together.

Jason DeSouza, a personal injury lawyer for families in South Texas, works closely with a leading expert in this field. He uses the information to help his clients show evidence to prove what happened when they were injured in an accident.
