Falfurrias is best known for its famous sweet cream butter that dates back to the early 1900s. And you would think that it is still produced here. After all, the label reads “Falfurrias Butter – A Texas Tradition Since 1909”.
But, what locals know is that even though this butter is still made in Texas, it’s not a part of Falfurrias anymore. In fact, it’s now produced in a large plant in Winnsboro – by the Dairy Farmers of America. Things aren’t always what they seem.
This is also the case with the big trucking industry.
In May 2019, a multi-car pileup happened just outside of Falfurrias along State Highway 285 – one driver lost his life at the scene, and another was pinned between two large trucks.
Could you imagine being pinned between two semi-trucks?
A Kia Sedona, along with the two tractor-trailers and a Ford F150 were headed west on 285 when they entered a construction zone. A construction worker was on the road holding up a flag for traffic to stop, but one of the large trucks, a 2019 Kenworth was unable to control its speed.
Instead of coming to a halt, the semi collided with the F150 sending it off the road. But it didn’t stop there. Still moving, the large truck then struck the other tractor-trailer. In the process of the collision, the small Kia Sedona was pinned between the two semi-trucks.
Luckily, the driver of the Kia survived as did the driver of the pickup truck and one of the two semi-truck drivers. Sadly, the driver of the tractor-trailer that caused the accident lost his life that day.
But the question remains, why couldn’t the driver of the semi-truck come to a halt like the other vehicles? Was he distracted? Was he properly trained?
Was he pressured by his company to push on even if he should have rested?
Or, maybe the semi needed repairs and the company neglected to take care of it.
Things aren’t always as they seem, and the company that owned the Kenworth truck could be held responsible for the damages it caused to the other parties.
